.54 caliber, 8 1/2″ barrel with captivated ramrod.   Lock plate marked  “U.S. / H. ASTON & CO.”  and dated “1848” at the rear.  The barrel is also dated “1848” at the breech.  Brass mounts with blued trigger.  Half stock bearing two U.S. inspector’s cartouches on the left flat.  Various inspector’s stamps appear on the appropriate parts.  In superb original condition showing little evidence use.   Appears unissued.
