.58 caliber, 44″ full octagon heavy barrel marked “H. DERINGER/PHILAD” on the top flat. Full length maple stock with cheekpiece and patchbox. Brass escutcheons are found at the wrist and cheekpiece. Flintlock with the makers name under the pan. Brass mounts. In very fine condition showing some evidence of an earlier restoration. All of the markings are crisp and the wood is very nice. Mechanically excellent. Ram rod missing. A fine example of the type of rifle used during the early western expansion not unlike the famous Hawkin rifle carried by Kit Carson. The large bore was of this rifle would have been particularly useful for the taking of large game such as Elk, Mule Deer, Bear.
